How to Choose Eyeshadow Colors

Choosing based on eye color
People with blue eyes can try lighter shades. Neutral tones like coral, champagne, or taupe work best. When applying eyeshadow, try sweeping champagne across the eyelid and a complementary brown shade into the crease.

Finish the look with black eyeliner to make your light-colored eyes pop.

Try a smoky look for gray eyes. Using smoky shades like misty gray or silver-blue helps highlight the eyes' natural gray tones rather than altering their color.

Try using black or dark brown eyeliner; this also makes the gray tones stand out more.

Try soft colors for green eyes. Shades like dusty purple/plum or brown will make green eyes look more vibrant.

Try applying a light pink to the eyelid and blending a deep purple upward into the crease. Blend the two colors together and finish with plum-colored eyeliner to accentuate the green.

Try metallic eyeshadows for hazel eyes. However, to maintain the natural amber tones, bronze, gold, or deeper pinks (like dusty rose) work best.

Try a neutral beige on the eyelid and a metallic green in the crease to enhance the mixed tones without altering them.

Try colors that contrast with brown eyes. However, shades like salmon, copper-gold, or reddish-brown work well too.

For light brown eyes, try more neutral tones, such as light pink on the eyelid and reddish-brown in the crease.

Choosing based on skin tone
Determine your skin tone. A simple way to do this is to observe your veins in natural light. If they appear blue or purple, you have a cool skin tone; this is common in people with fair or pale skin. However, if your veins appear green, you have a warm skin tone, which may indicate olive skin. If you cannot determine the color, you may have a neutral, deeper skin tone. However, keep in mind that people with deeper skin tones can also have cool or warm undertones.

If you are still unsure of your skin tone, ask yourself whether you tan easily or burn easily in the sun. If you tan easily, you likely have warm undertones. If you burn easily, you likely have cool undertones.

You can also decide based on whether silver or gold suits you better. Warm undertones look best with gold, while cool undertones look best with silver. Neutral undertones, on the other hand, look equally good with both.

If none of the above methods seem to work, or if you simply cannot tell, you most likely fall into the neutral category.

Try pairing neutral undertones with warm-toned colors. Colors like copper, soft pink, coral, or light green can help enhance your natural skin tone.

Try using cool-toned colors such as silver and blue.

Try products suitable for neutral skin tones. However, to harmonize with your natural skin tone, try shades like light taupe or cream.

For deeper skin tones, avoid dull or pale colors. Instead, opt for more vibrant colors-such as jewel tones (emerald green, violet, ruby, sapphire)-which appear softer and more flattering on deeper skin.

For those with fair skin, avoid gray and dark gray shades. Instead, choose softer pastels like lilac, rose, or light blue; these colors stand out against the skin without being overly harsh.

Choosing based on hair color
Determine your hair color. This makes selecting eyeshadow easier and helps you find the shade that suits you best.

Try products suitable for black and brown hair. However, vibrant colors like black, purple, yellow, green, or brown will create a striking contrast with your hair color. On the other hand, if you have fair skin and dark hair, it is best to stick with neutral shades-such as gold and beige-or other light tones; this prevents your skin from looking bruised.

Try pairing blonde hair with neutral or natural tones. Sticking to colors like gray, pink, black, blue, gold, or cream can enhance your natural coloring without making you look bruised or tired.

For red or reddish-brown hair, try bold, semi-matte colors. High-shine or glittery shades might distract from the vibrancy of your hair.

For gray or white hair, try soft, pale shades. Colors like gray, lilac, or blue can help highlight the natural nuances of your hair.

Experiment with different colors for vibrant hair. However, choosing a color opposite on the color wheel can help make your hair color truly stand out.
