Based on dosage form, eyeshadows are categorized into solid types and liquid-to-paste types; solid eyeshadows are convenient to carry and use, whereas liquid-to-paste eyeshadows offer superior water resistance and long-lasting wear.

Depending on formulation and physical form, eyeshadows can be further classified into the following categories: Pressed powder eyeshadows are the most common type. They are typically produced by pressing powders of various shades into small, shallow pans and housing them in a compact for portability and ease of use. Their formulation is similar to that of pressed face powders and blushes, consisting of base pigments, white pigments, colorants (or pearlescent pigments), binders (such as metallic soaps), and fragrances; application is typically performed using a sponge-tipped applicator or a small brush.

Oil-based ointment and stick-type eyeshadows share a formulation base similar to that of lipsticks, consisting of pigment powders evenly dispersed in a mixture of oils or waxes. Stick-type products come in various formats, such as standard sticks, pencils, or crayons. While less ubiquitous than pressed powder eyeshadows, they offer better longevity and are particularly suitable for dry skin.

Emulsion-type eyeshadows are formulated and manufactured similarly to emulsion-based foundation creams, utilizing a lotion or cream base in which pigments are dispersed. They offer advantages such as easy spreadability, good adhesion, and a non-greasy feel, making them well-suited for oily skin, although their wear time is slightly shorter than that of anhydrous formulations.
